The Automatic Route Control System (ARCS) is a self-controlled automated system that manages actions such as delivery or pickup of commodities performed along specified routes and guides the functioning of a traditional motor vehicle. The system monitors the vehicle's location coordinates in practice and correlates them to the route coordinates, and then delivers relevant auditory, visual, and/or printed commands based on the location. The system also detects driver faults and recommends actions to fix problems. The routes to be travelled and the actions to be conducted are defined on replaceable magnetic tape cartridges that can be updated daily or as needed from a central computer file. ARCS enables a motorist to navigate a complex route efficiently without the use of maps or lists, as well as without prior knowledge of the route. Due to computer-prepared data for route computing can be gathered on a magnetic tape cartridge, it also removes time-consuming manual report preparation.
