The global eye health ingredients market is expected to grow at a significant CAGR 7% during the forecast period (2022-2028).  The market has been growing in recent years, as the world's population has gotten older, and consumers have been more interested in nutrition-based age-related disease prevention. The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, which are found in the inner region of the retina (the macula) and protect the eye from UV damage, are often utilized in eye health products. However, there are hundreds of other carotenoids found in nature that, while not found in the eye, have been shown to be beneficial to eye health in studies. Companies such as OmniActive Health Technologies, Kemin, and DSM are promoting the benefits of carotenoids, particularly lutein and zeaxanthin, for eye health, while Lycored promotes the benefits of its tomato-derived lycopene carotenoid component. Algatech states that its astaxanthin component, an algae-derived carotenoid, promotes eye health and may be used in a variety of supplement formats as well as functional foods and beverages. Further, Vitamin A, which has been proven to have potential in avoiding cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and bilberry extracts are popularly assumed to aid night vision and retinal health.

The major companies operating in the market are highly inclined towards the adoption of different growth strategies including partnerships and collaborations, mergers and acquisitions, geographical expansion, and new product launches, to remain competitive in the marketplace. For instance, in November 2021, during SupplySide West 2021, Ashland (Wilmington, DE) introduced their latest soy-free GPM nutrition as well as two new additions to its N-dur xr technology range. To enhance bioavailability, soy-free GPM nutrients are linked to a dietary source. The gluten-free, non-GMO, Kosher-certified nutrients are manufactured with a patented technology and are part of a whole-food matrix. Ashland released soy-free GPM lutein for companies producing eye health supplements to treat eye strain from prolonged screen usage. In January 2018, Maypro Industries announced its branded ingredients portfolio, Bilberon. Bilberon is a high-quality bilberry extract that has been clinically tested. Bilberon has been the subject of five original published studies, including two human clinical trials, showing that it supports to relieve eye tiredness, improve eye dryness, and maintain clear focused vision.
