The global industrial control systems (ICS) security market is expected to grow at a significant CAGR during the forecast period (2021-2027). Many improvements in efficiency and productivity are projected as a result of the transition to Industry 4.0, as well as numerous changes in the way industrial processes operate. Factors such as increased efficiency and lower production costs when compared to traditional manufacturing processes have boosted automation adoption, resulting in increased demand for industrial control systems. However, the adoption of ICS solutions comes along with the requirement for security, as cyber-attacks and network security concerns are on the rise.
To deliver power, water, transportation, manufacturing, and other key services, ICS security systems have been implemented to monitor complex industrial processes and critical infrastructures. As the majority of these systems are linked to the internet, they are susceptible to the same vulnerabilities as any other networked system. Any significant downtime or intrusion of an ICS network can result in large outages, tens of thousands of users, and perhaps a national tragedy. Furthermore, upgrades to these systems are sluggish due to the existing lack of OTA update capabilities, leaving these systems more exposed to outsider threats.
Internal access to the bulk of these systems requires little or no authentication or encryption. As a result, insiders typically have unrestricted access to any network device, including SCADA applications and other key components. As a result, these systems are extremely vulnerable to insider attacks. Malware or a USB device can compromise systems that have been upgraded and connected to a digital interface. Additionally, human errors such as wrong settings, PLC programming problems, or the inability to monitor vital metrics or warnings might jeopardise network security. The majority of network sites are exposed to the public internet and lack basic protection (such as updated anti-virus), allowing attackers to quietly conduct reconnaissance before sabotaging physical processes like assembly lines, mixing tanks, and blast furnaces. This, in turn, is accelerating the demand for the ICS security market to monitor and control industrial processes.
