The global market for lensed fiber is expected to grow at a CAGR during the forecast period (2021-2027). Lens Fibers are long, thin, translucent cells that are tightly packed and have diameters ranging from 4 to 7 micrometres and lengths of up to 12 mm. The lens fibers run longitudinally from the posterior to the anterior poles and are organised in concentric layers when sliced horizontally, similar to the layers of an onion. It resembles a honeycomb when sliced along the equator. The equator runs through the centre of each fiber. Laminae are the closely packed layers of lens fibers that make up the lens. Gap junctions and interdigitations of the cells, which resemble "ball and socket" shapes, connect the lens fibers.
Lensed fiber is used in conjunction with a miniaturized fiber raster scanner to reduce the output beam size of the fiber, resulting in a compact and flexible endoscope with a large field of view (FOV) and high spatial resolution. The fabricated lensed fiber scanner is used in conjunction with a miniaturised gradient-index assembly to achieve a one-photon lateral resolution of 1.1 m with a FOV diameter of 440 m as a proof of concept.
The growth in use of endoscopes is mostly due to an increase in cancer incidence, which in turn drives demand for lensed fibers. According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, Europe and Oceania had the highest rate of colorectal cancer in 2012 which was 468 people per 100,000
Furthermore, as the geriatric population grows, the market is projected to expand even faster, since they are more vulnerable to illnesses like cancer, which would drive up demand for lensed fibers for endoscopy. According to the US Census Bureau, the geriatric population in the US is expected to grow significantly between 2012 and 2050. The population of people aged 65 and up is expected to reach 83.7 million in 2050, nearly double the estimated population of 43.1 million in 2012. As a result, the demand for lensed fibers in endoscopy is expected to grow as the geriatric population increases.
