The global market for pentosan polysulfate sodium is expected to grow at a significant CAGR during the forecast period (2021-2027). Pentosan polysulfate sodium is a semi-synthetically generated heparin-like macromolecular carbohydrate derivative that mimics glycosaminoglycans chemically and structurally. It's an odourless white powder that's somewhat hygroscopic and dissolves in water up to 50% at pH 6. Pentosan polysulphate sodium, often known as PPS or pentosan polysulphate, is an organic medication produced from sugar derived from beech tree bark. Pentosan polysulphate promotes and strengthens the body's defence and healing mechanisms, as well as the development of new tissue, safely and effectively. The anticoagulant, fibrinolytic, and thrombolytic properties of pentosan polysulphate sodium come with a low risk of adverse effects.

Pentosan polysulphate sodium is approved for the treatment of interstitial cystitis, as supportive therapy for arterial vascular disorders (Claudicatio Intermittent), and as a veterinary pharmaceutical product for osteoarthritis symptoms in several countries throughout the world. Pentosan, a veterinary medication, is a successful therapy for osteoarthritis. Human clinical trials in Australia and Japan show that it may be useful as an osteoarthritis therapy.

Due to the ageing population and associated variables like obesity, the prevalence of osteoarthritis is rising. According to the United Nations, persons over the age of 60 will make up more than 20% of the global population by 2050. A conservative estimate of 15% of that 20% will develop symptomatic Osteoarthritis, with one-third of those seriously handicapped. Men and women of all racial and cultural backgrounds, as well as all ages, are affected by Interstitial Cystitis (IC). It is, nevertheless, more frequent in women than in males. Early studies showed that the frequency of IC in the general population ranged from 1 in 100,000 to 5.1 in 100,000; however, current epidemiologic data published by CDC shows that up to 12% of women may have early signs of IC. As a result, the rising incidence of osteoarthritis and interstitial cystitis will drive the global market growth of pentosan polyphosphate sodium during the forecast period as it is used as a therapy to cure both osteoarthritis and interstitial cystitis.
