The global platinum-based anti-cancer drugs market is expected to grow at a significant CAGR during the forecast period (2021-2027).  These are commonly used as chemotherapeutic drugs in the treatment of cancer. Certain cancer treatments use platinum as a cell-damaging agent. Patients receiving chemotherapy are given platinum-based drugs in about 10% to 20% of cases. These drugs can be used alone or in conjunction with other medications.

The global market for platinum-based anti-cancer drugs is driven by an increase in the prevalence of cancer. Cancer is one of the top causes of mortalities across the globe. There were 18.1 million new cancer cases and 9.5 million cancer-related mortalities recorded globally in 2018. As per NCI, by 2040, the annual number of new cancer cases is predicted to reach 29.5 million, with 16.4 million cancer-related mortality. Cancer rates are generally highest in countries with the highest life expectancy, educational attainment, and style of living.

Breast cancer, lung and bronchus cancer, prostate cancer, colon and rectum cancer, melanoma of the skin, bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, kidney and renal pelvis cancer, endometrial cancer, leukaemia, pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer, and liver cancer are the most common cancers. In Asia, 10,26,171 new cases of breast cancer were reported in 2020 with approximately 346,009 mortalities. This, in turn, is driving the demand for platinum-based drugs cisplatin, carboplatin and oxaliplatin that are extensively utilized in the therapy of human neoplasms. Recent developments in platinum-based pharmaceuticals include the creation of analogues of platinum medications, such as platinum complexes with a carrier molecule, to improve the drug's targeted concentration in cancer tumours.
