The global space-based lasercom terminals market is anticipated to grow at a significant CAGR during the forecast period. The major factor for the growth of the market is the increasing number of satellite launches globally. Since 1957, after the launch of the first satellite, Sputnik 1 more than 8,900 satellites have been launched. With this increased number of satellites, there was a need for faster retransmission of the information back to the Earth due to that there is a growing demand for global space-based lasercom terminals.

The laser terminal is generally designed in such a way that it is fitted on board the geostationary satellites (GEO, due to that the high-definition images and videos are transmitted back to the earth within no time. The GEO satellite main work is to transmit the data it collects from the low-orbiting satellite (LEO). Earlier the time taken for the transmission was several hours; hence the need for installing a laser-based emitter came up.

Some of the key global players in the space-based lasercom terminal market include AAC Clyde Space (Hyperion Technologies), Analytical Space Operation, Ball Corporation, BridgeComm, General Atomics, HENSOLDT, Honeywell International, Laser Light Communication (Halo Network), and many others. In September 2019, Xenesis signed an agreement with Hartwell Capitol Consulting for $212 million in that the company supplied laser terminals for high-speed data transfer between the space and ground communications. Astrogate Labs, a Bengaluru based startup launched in 2017, was developed by Astro-Link which is a laser-based communication system used for the transmission of data from space to the ground and vice-a-versa. It is estimated that more than 17,000 small satellites will be launched by 2030 in the Low Earth Orbit that will fuel the growth of the space-based lasercom terminal market.
