France entertainment industry will see the considerable growth of 7.9% during the forecast period. France is regarded as one of the most successful film industries in Europe. As per Cineuropa, with 301 feature films approved in 2019, including 240 films of French initiative (FIF - three more than in 2018) and 61 minority productions, French film production in 2019 beat its previous record (300 features in 2017, 2015 and 2018). According to the Centre National du Cinéma et de l'imageanimée (CNC), around 209 million cinema admissions were registered in 2017. In addition, the country stands out with an exceptionally high share of broadcaster financing, with around 35 different broadcasting languages available in the country, including Turkish, Arabic, Tamil, and Urdu.

However, the COVID-19 outbreak has triggered a reality check for the French film industry, as the theatres are shut down, films and TV shoots are halted, and a number of movie releases have been canceled. In March 2020, the French government passed a temporary measure allowing national cinema body the CNC to unilaterally shorten the video-on-demand windows for films that were on release as cinemas across the country shut down following the outbreak of COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus. In addition, Netflix partnered with the French body Groupe Audiens, the country’s central mutual social security fund aimed at media and entertainment professionals, to assist the launch of an emergency relief fund for film and TV sector workers in France hit by the production shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
