As per the German E-Commerce and Distance Selling Trade Association (BEVH), after a decline in the first quarter, e-commerce increased above average in the second quarter in the country. E-commerce has returned to its normal growth during the first half of 2020. E-commerce growth of 16.5% was reported in the second quarter of 2020, after a COVID-19-related stagnation of 1.5% in the first quarter of 2020. With a rise of 35.7% in the first half of 2020 and 51.2% in the second quarter of 2020, everyday products including food, medicines, pet supplies, or drugstores increased the most.

During the period, April to June 2020, consumers spent nearly $22.7 billion including VAT in online retail. In the entire first half of the year (January to June 2020), revenues totaled nearly $41.2 billion including VAT, 9.2% more than the first half (January to June) of 2019. Digital services including hotel bookings, electronic tickets, downloads, etc. recorded sales of only nearly $1.5 billion including VAT in the second quarter of 2020, compared to nearly $5.4 billion including VAT in the second quarter of 2019. This was a dramatic effect of lockdown on travel and cultural events which have been seen in full severity in e-commerce.
