Increasing Regulatory Requirements for Automobiles to Boost Demand for Testing, Inspection, and Certification

Published: Jul 2024

Automotive Testing, Inspection, and Certification (TIC) market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 4.6% during the forecast period (2024–2031). Globally, governments and automotive safety standard institutions are increasingly adopting and deploying stringent safety and environmental regulations, standards, and frameworks for enhancing road safety. Preventing causalities occurring from mechanical breakdowns and reducing environmental emissions has stimulated demand for automotive TIC services. The procurement of required certification through testing and inspection of automotive and related components leads to the timely approval of vehicles in regulatory testing programs such as the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP).

Recent Developments

  • In April 2024, the European Council approved the Euro 7 standard which establishes emission limitations for road cars and battery durability. This is the final phase in the decision-making procedure. The Euro 7 legislation specifies rules for not just road vehicle exhaust emissions, but also tire abrasion and brake particle emissions. It also establishes requirements for battery durability. For vehicles and vans, the legislation maintains the current Euro 6 exhaust emission limits while introducing stronger solid particle regulations. The legislation puts stricter limitations on different pollutants for heavy-duty buses and trucks, including some that were previously unregulated, such as nitrous oxide.
  • In March 2022, UL, a solution provider in safety science has been designated by the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW) as a technical service for auditing and testing vehicles, including passenger cars, vans, trucks, and buses, for compliance with two key United Nations automotive cybersecurity standards. These regulations include United Nations Regulation No. 155 (UN R155), which addresses cybersecurity and requires connected vehicles to have a certified cybersecurity management system (CSMS), and UN R156, which addresses software update management systems (SUMS) for connected vehicles.
