The global blood glucose monitoring systems market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period (2022-2028). According to International Diabetes Federation, more than 460 million people suffering from diabetes in 2019 and this figure is estimated to reach 700 million by 2045. Thus, the monitoring of blood glucose level is important for diabetes patients. Conventional devices for glucose monitoring require a small amount of blood to be drawn out of the body by needle insertion in the skin. It often causes discomfort and pain after repeated use and poses risks of potential infection and tissue damage. As a result, there has been a continuous effort for developing non-invasive and minimally-invasive devices, aimed at reducing some of the issues connected with the traditional invasive methods.

Further, traditional blood glucose monitoring systems show glucose levels only at a specific point in time which has limited value as the user cannot estimate the glucose levels before or in the hours after the test. The non-invasive and minimum invasive AI-enabled devices capture readings every fraction of minutes, record the highs and lows, and monitor time in range, thus enabling people to observe how their glucose levels are fluctuating through the day. Thus, all these factors have led to the growing demand for innovative devices with minimally or non-invasive technologies.
Several players have come forward with innovative devices and overcome the concerns faced by traditional devices. For instance, in January 2022, Health-tech startup BlueSemi launched Eyva, a non-invasive glucometer for diabetics that can provide results without any pricking or needles. The device uses sensor technology to be able to record the glucose molecules inside the body. In November 2020, Abbott laboratories launched the FreeStyle Libre system in India. It is a continuous glucose monitoring device which tracks blood glucose levels in blood with the minimum invasive method. In 2019, Nemaura, a UK-based medical technology company launched, sugarBEAT wearable sensor platform, which received C.E. approval 2019 and is a non-invasive CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) where the sensor is attached to the upper arm. It is a non-invasive device and does not require the sensor to be inserted inside the skin. The user can monitor glucose levels through the wearable sensor in real-time without having to scan the device or any other intervention. After its launch in Europe, Nemaura is further planning launches in Germany, Saudi Arabia and UAE.
