Growing Demand for High-Energy-Density Cathodes Drives Growth of Cathode Material Market

Published: Aug 2024

Cathode material market is anticipated to grow at a steady CAGR of 15.2% during the forecast period (2024-2031). The demand for high-energy-density cathodes such as lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) and lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) is driving the expansion of the cathode material market. Investments in R&D, along with the growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and portable electronics, are driving this increased demand for higher-performing and more efficient batteries. As industries and consumers collectively seek longer-lasting and more powerful energy storage solutions, the development and innovations in cathode materials that offer superior energy density and longevity are expected to continue.

Recent Developments

  • In April 2024, Gelion, the Anglo-Australian battery innovator, provided an update on its Next Generation Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) battery development. Gelion has achieved a significant milestone by creating a 395 Wh/kg lithium-sulfur 9.5 Ah pouch cell, which is a commercial cell format. This represents a roughly 60.0% increase in energy density (lower weight) compared to current lithium-ion batteries, which have an energy density of approximately 250 Wh/kg. Interestingly, Gelion had previously produced 1.0 Ah cells using the OXIS Gen2 cell technology, achieving an energy density of 245 Wh/kg. The accomplishment of 395 Wh/kg is in line with the independent energy density modeling projections for a larger cell format.
  • In July 2021, BASF was chosen by Cellforce Group for creating a joint venture between Porsche and Customcells, as the sole cell development partner for its upcoming lithium-ion battery. In this partnership, BASF will supply high-energy HEDTM NCM cathode active materials to help create high-performance battery cells capable of fast charging and high energy density.
