Published: May 2023

The global dark chocolate market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 7.2 % during the forecast period (2023–2030). Dark chocolate has gained popularity and is considered to have health benefits. Dark chocolate containing at least 70% cocoa is high in essential nutrients. It is high in iron, magnesium, copper, and manganese. It contains calcium, potassium, zinc, and traces of vitamins A, B, E, and K. The elements in it support factors such as immunity (zinc), bone and tooth health (phosphorus), and sleep quality (magnesium). A 100-gram bar of dark chocolate contains about 10 grammes (or 3.5 ounces) of fibre that is beneficial to gut health. Dark chocolate is made from cocoa flavanols. Flavanols are antioxidants that help in the reduction of inflammation and the enhancement of brain function. The average cocoa solids bar contains 50-90% cocoa butter, sugar and cocoa solids.

Dark chocolate consumption lowers blood sugar levels; it is possible that the cocoa polyphenols in dark chocolate can directly influence insulin resistance and reduce the risk of diabetes. Cocoa contains flavanols, that constitute plant chemicals that helps to protect the heart. Dark chocolate has up to 2-3 times the amount of flavanol-rich cocoa solids as milk chocolate. Flavanols have been shown to help the endothelium (the inner cell lining of blood vessels) produce nitric oxide (NO), that helps to relax the blood vessels and improve blood flow, lowering blood pressure. They stimulate insulin secretion and the production of pancreatic beta cells, lowering blood sugar levels. According to Canadian researchers, in a study involving 44,489 people, people who ate one serving of chocolate were 22% less likely to have a stroke than those who did not. Furthermore, those who consumed approximately two ounces of chocolate per week were 46% less likely to die from a stroke. Owing to its anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties, dark chocolate is considered a functional food.
