There is a significant opportunity for air ambulance all across the globe. For instance, in November 2018, as per the research of the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Center for Injury Sciences, there is no dedicated Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) at all, especially in Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Malta. A charter and management company in UK named Gama Aviation has invested around $22 million to launch helicopter as an air ambulance arm. The company has bought three identical-spec Airbus H145s in HEMS configuration. From June 2020, two out of three helicopters will be used as a HEMS as it has gone into contract with the Scottish Ambulance Service. As per OMR Analysis, EMS helicopter and its service market were around $2.3 billion combined growing at a CAGR of more than 7.0% during the forecast period.
A shortage of emergency services in such high-income countries creates a significant demand for the market and hence provide growth opportunities to the helicopter industry during the forecast period. Similar growth trends are also expected in the emerging economies in Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East region.
Airbus is one of the major players in the air ambulance industry. The US-based company offers Airbus’ H125 and H130 as the single-engine helicopter for EMS medical services. The single-engine in the H125 helicopter provides an ambient space to accommodate one stretcher and up to three medical crew members along with the medical equipment. Whereas, an H130 can accommodate up to four medical crew members. As per the company, around 200 of these helicopters are under operational. The company also offers other multi-engine helicopter engines for EMS services. Some of the other major companies which manufacture EMS configuration helicopters include Leonardo S.p.A., Bell Textron Inc., the Boeing Co., and others. Bell 429s, Kopter’s SH09, AW139s of Leonardo S.p.A are some of the major competitors of the Airbus EMS helicopters.
