The global polyamide resins market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of nearly 6% during the forecast period. Polyamide resins are high-density, opaque polymers with superior heat tolerance and strength. As compared to other polymers, polyamide stands potentially in extreme temperatures and has been effectively utilized to replace some metal parts in under-the-hood automotive applications such as power steering fluid, brake oil, and engine coolant. Further, it has potential applications in the electrical and electronics industry owing to exceptional weld-line strength, high flow, and high mechanical strength.

Further, 3D printing is offering an opportunity for the adoption of polyamide resins. Owing to the rising adoption of thermoplastic resins, including polyamide resins, the manufacturers of these materials are focusing on expanding the application base of their products that can contribute to leverage their share in the market. As a result, they are adopting certain strategies including mergers and acquisitions and product launches, to increase their expertise and range of products. Some key strategies adopted by BASF SE, Evonik Industries AG, and DOMO Chemicals GmbH include-
- In January 2020, BASF completes the acquisition of polyamide (PA 6.6) business of Solvay. The acquisition will widen polyamide capabilities of BASF with advanced and renowned products including Technyl. This will enable BASF to serve its customers with even potential engineering plastics solutions for applications including e-mobility and autonomous driving. It will also enhance the BASF access to North and South America and Asian markets. With the backward integration into the major raw material adiponitrile (ADN), the company will improve its supply reliability and will be present along the whole value chain for polyamide 6.6. The acquired business will be incorporated into the BASF Performance Materials and Monomers divisions.
- In January 2020, DOMO Chemicals acquired Performance Polyamides Business of Solvay in Europe. The business comprises High-Performance Fibers in France; Engineering Plastics operations in Poland and France; Polymer and Intermediates operations in Poland Spain, and France. This acquisition is intended to strengthen the nylon-based engineering materials business of DOMO Chemicals. With this agreement, new and current customers of both companies will get access to more sustainable, advanced, and high-quality solutions for their products in the current dynamic market environment.
- In October 2019, Evonik declared that it has produced a highly transparent polymer-based on new monomers. This named TROGAMID HT which incorporates a comparatively high heat deflection temperature with low water uptake and better mechanical properties. Therefore, it is perfectly suitable for high-end ATEX applications in the extreme temperature range. Over the decades, the development of some industrial applications for transparent polyamides has been complex owing to their insufficient resistance to high temperature. However, with TROGAMID HT, the company is launching a new polymer that possesses a 172°C glass transition temperature, which is 30°C more than compared to TROGAMID products and thus ensures extreme heat resistance.
