A Wide Range of Applications and Benefits is increasing the Demand for Polycarbonate Films

Published: Oct 2024

Global polycarbonate films market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 6.9% during the forecast period (2024-2031). The growing adoption of these films across several end-user industries owing to their offered advantages (such as durability, impact resistance, and optical clarity) is a key factor driving the global market growth. For instance, it is used in the electrical and electronics sectors, owing to its ability to withstand high temperatures and harsh environmental conditions. Additionally, the films can be easily thermoformed, and molded, and offer excellent ink adhesion, which is also contributing to market growth.

The global polycarbonate films market is segmented by type (clear and colored/tinted), by end-user industry (automotive, building & construction, consumer products, electrical & electronics, medical, and others), and by geographies (North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Rest of the World).

Market Dynamics

  • The automotive segment is expected to exhibit the highest CAGR during the forecast period, owing to various applications such as dashboard components, display panels, and lighting designs. It helps to enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of automotive parts by offering high impact resistance, optical clarity, lightweight nature, and excellent printability.
  • Asia-Pacific holds the largest market share, attributed to the presence of major manufacturers of polycarbonate films, easy availability of raw materials, and the significant presence of end-user industries across the region. Additionally, the high product demand contributes significantly to the growth of the regional market.
  • However, the market growth is restrained by the easy availability of substitutes, such as acrylic, polystyrene, and urethane materials among others. In addition, the stringent environmental conservation restrictions are also restraining the market growth.
  • The shift in preferences for window and windscreen materials is presenting opportunities for market growth.

The major players in the global polycarbonate films market include 3M Company, Covestro AG, Mitsubishi Chemical Corp., LG Chem Ltd., Teijin Ltd., and SABIC among others. The market players are contributing significantly to the market growth, by the adoption of various business strategies, such as collaborations, mergers and acquisitions, product portfolio diversification, and more.

Recent Developments

  • In September 2024, SABIC's Functional Forms and Röhm’s Acrylic Products collaborated to form POLYVANTIS. The entity will provide sheets and films across various sectors, including building and construction, electrical and electronics, automotive, air and rail, healthcare and security, and lighting and signage. The two brands namely PLEXIGLAS® / ACRYLITE® and LEXAN™ deliver solutions in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC).
  • In March 2023, Covestro announced an expansion of its polycarbonate film production capacity in Thailand. The investment is in the higher double-digit million-euro range. In addition, the competition of the facility is planned for 2025.
