Growing demand from end-user industries, including healthcare, electronics, industrial equipment, automobile, photovoltaic, aerospace, is expected to contribute to the growth of the silicon nitride market. The biggest driver of growth for market will be increasing market penetration of its key target applications, as it replaces other materials. Much of this is being driven by developments amongst ceramics processors, who are opening up new uses of silicon nitride with process innovations enabling, for example, more complex shapes or better surface finishes. Even for mature applications such as bearings, the demands of modern motors and engines (smaller and yet more powerful), silicon nitride is being used more and more frequently in place of steel.

Threats to capacity growth in silicon nitride market include factors such as increased durability (lower replacement rates) and component miniaturization due to demands such as automotive light-weighting. However, these factors are not expected to have a significant impact. Instead, the development of silicon nitride processing technologies will require greater use of the material to fabricate large parts. This will have a positive net impact on volume silicon nitride growth.
Further, as the photovoltaic industry is growing in MW terms; cells are also becoming more efficient, meaning that less material is needed to produce each MW of panels. For example, in November 2016, Trina Solar announced that it had created a multi-crystalline cell with an efficiency of 21.25%. The solar cell industry requires the most expensive grades of silicon nitride, which most producers refer to as ultra-high purity grade (with, for example, Fe < 10 ppm). This requirement is expected to stay sharp over the forecast period.
The price of solar cells has dropped dramatically in recent years. This has been particularly exacerbated by the Chinese government reduced subsidies for solar power. Silicon nitride producers see their prices hit by this downstream price pressure. Silicon nitride tends to be cheaper in the regions that are experiencing the highest volume demand growth rates, such as China. The net effect of this will be to make global revenue growth slightly lower than volume growth. However, silicon nitride is not the only option available to producers of multi-crystalline silicon but also can be used in cheaper materials such as SiC.
