Global Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) market is anticipated to grow at a significant CAGR of 13.8% during the forecast period (2024-2031).The market growth is attributed to the increasinguse of chemical synthesis, the expansion of the global chemical industry, and the strong demand for it in a variety of applications, such as chemical synthesis and industrial gasesglobally.Synthetic natural gas has a broad application in the manufacture of bio-SNG and is a medium- to long-term solution. Synthetic natural gas is created similarly to bio-SNG. For instance, in June 2021, Baker Hughes investedin bio-methanation technology company Electrochaea to expand its carbon utilization portfolio with a power-to-gas solution. Through its investmentBaker Hughes enables the production of low-carbon synthetic natural gas (SNG) from captured CO2 and green hydrogen, helping meet the demand for cleaner fuels to advance the energy transition.

Market players haveactively invested in LNG bunkering infrastructure, which is critical to supporting theirshipping customers' adoption of SNG as a marine fuel. As compared to traditional marine fuel and has the potential to cut emissions even further when combined with synthetic or bio LNG. For instance, in April 2024, TotalEnergies introduced the Marsa LNG project and deployedits multi-energy strategy in the Sultanate of Oman. Marine LNG sharply reduces emissions from ships and significantly improves air quality. Used as a marine fuel, LNG helps to cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 23.0% compared to conventional marine fuel and has the potential to reduce emissions significantly more if bio or synthetic LNG is used.
The methanation technology to the current LNG value chain to develop an e-methane value chain. E-methane is intended to be created as a practical means at LNG receiving and liquefactionfacilities as well as at other locations that produce large amounts of carbon dioxide. To use it as fuel, it will combine the e-methane with natural gas pipelines. For instance, in October 2022, IHI introduced a methanation system to produce fuel from carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The system can synthesizesynthetic methane productionat 12.5 normal meters cubed per hour. The compact housing facilitates fast installation and makes it possible to expand methane production by setting up multiple units.
